Free Gift Ideas
1) Pillow fight
Who remembers the pillow fights they had as kids? Often times they were accompanied by gales of laughter, and they certainly were a great workout at the same time. What fun to give a pillow and a challenge to a fight!
Feather pillows carry quite a wallop when the feathers compact, so use a fiber filled pillow and make the first swing a little more gentle.
Who doesn’t love a good massage at the end of a hard day of working or playing? Unlike the pillow fight where the goal is to release energy and joy, a massage releases peace and ease. So, if that is your desire, give the gift of a personal message.
This one does require at least a little bit of skill, so if your abilities are lacking we recommend looking for another way to provide this gift … like maybe hire a professional.
3) Home cooked meal
Why not give the folks a break and cook them a meal? Depending on your age and your skill level it can be anything from cereal and milk for breakfast in bed or a full cooked meal. If you hold special skills in this area – who wouldn’t coming home to a beautiful meal cooked by a friend? The added bonus: sharing that same meal with that friend.
The extra touches go a long way too…Pretty up your plate, tray or table with flowers from the garden, candles or fancy folded napkins.
4) Compliment Jar
Who doesn’t love a compliment, especially on a down day? Why not create a compliment jar for that special person in your life so that they can reach in a grab a heart-felt compliment from you when the mood strikes? This is a great gift for that hard to buy for person, or the person who has everything.
Make the jar a theme jar. If your recipient is a painter, use a small paint can. If they are a coffee lover, an old coffee container works well.
5) Game Challenge
Family game night or game night with friends is a great gift! Simply gather up all of your favorite board games, create a master score sheet where you can track the winners of each game and let the challenge begin!
Use favorite games from your childhood that are short and simple. The goal is to play a variety of games over an afternoon or evening.
They say laughter is the best medicine, and it also makes a great gift! Why not create a scrapbook of all of your favorite cartoons and give it to the person who shares your quirky sense of humor? You could also create a laugh jar, similar to the compliment jar, that holds your favorite 1 liners! Brighter colours inspire happy feelings. Use bright, joyful colors!

7) Your skill
What’s your superpower, or claim to fame? The gift of your time and your skill could be one of the greatest gifts you can give, and all it takes is your time & your skill. What do you do well?? Cook, clean, babysit, garden, sew, drive, shop? Whatever that is, create a unique gift certificate for a day of babysitting, a day of housecleaning, six hours of errand running—you get the idea.
Follow up within just a few days to set the exact time your certificate will be redeemed. Your recipient may be too embarrassed to remind you to make good on the gift.
Do you have a favorite plant that grows and divides easily? Why not take a cutting and give it to a friend? It is a gift that will serve as a happy reminder of your friendship.
You could also customize the pot. Using water-based paints, felts, stickers or other items decorate the ceramic pot.
9) Recycling chore coupon book
If your home is like mine sorting the recycling sometimes feels like a thankless chore. Why not give the person usually responsible for this a break and take on some of those tasks? Create a coupon book of the various tasks for recycling like rinsing containers, sorting out containers that have a deposit for refund or any other of the tasks – even just taking the recycling out. Sorting recycling can be easier if you have specially marked containers for the various categories. Create a container with a big $ sign on it for those items that you can bring into the depots for refund. And come to any of our Regional Recycling locations for a FREE Electronics Recycling Box to help sort all your small electronics and appliances.

10) A Hug
“There is a saying by Virginia Satir, a respected family therapist, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth.”
Eight or more might seem quite high, but while researching and writing this article I asked my child, “How many hugs a day do you like?” She said, “I’m not going to tell you how many I like, but it’s way more than eight.” That really made me smile and touched my heart. And, I realized how organic and deep the need for hugs is.” Quoted from article 10 Reasons Why We Need at Least 8 Hugs a Day from MindBodyGreen.com
